Torre Pieve Chardonnay
Igt Verona

Torre Pieve Chardonnay
Igt Verona

Our Chardonnay Igt is a wine of great character, fully expressing the mineral potential typical of the Valle d’Illasi terroir. Its grapes come from three different clones from Burgundy, grown at high density and low yield on our estate in Colognola ai Colli.

Torre Pieve is a pure Chardonnay of great elegance and complexity, partly vinified with fermentation and ageing in French oak barrels. The good structure and distinctive hints of citrus fruits, hazelnuts and melted butter create an excellent harmony between softness, acidity and crispness.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Chardonnay is a white grape variety native to the Burgundy region of France and is today one of the most cultivated and appreciated varieties in the world. The history of this wine dates back to the Middle Ages, when Cistercian and Benedictine monks, who owned vineyards in Burgundy, developed its cultivation and winemaking. The grape variety takes its name from a small village called just that Chardonnay. This is located in the Mâconnais, a sub-zone of southern Burgundy. Some scholars believe that it is the result of a spontaneous cross between Pinot Noir and Gouais Blanc, an ancient grape variety spread in Europe by the Romans. This crossbreeding has resulted in a plant with an extraordinary ability to adapt to different climates and soils, a characteristic that has favoured its global diffusion over the centuries.

In France, Chardonnay grapes play a leading role in some of the world’s most renowned white wines, including Chablis (from northern Burgundy), known for its fresh, mineral character, given by the calcareous soil of the region. In the Côte de Beaune (southern Burgundy), Chardonnay is instead used to create more complex and round wines, often aged in oak barrels, such as Meursault and Montrachet. Chardonnay also plays a key role in the production of Champagne, in particular the Blanc de Blancs, made from a selected blend of white grapes, which gives the wine elegance, a remarkable ageing capacity and an unmistakable bouquet. The Chardonnay’s versatility therefore lies not only in the vineyard’s adaptability but also in the surprising vinification versatility of its grapes. It can be fermented and aged in oak barrels, giving the wine buttery and toasty notes, or vinified in stainless steel to preserve freshness and fruity notes. All these characteristics make Chardonnay one of the few grape varieties capable of expressing itself in a truly wide range of styles, from bubbles to great still aging wines.

In Italy, Chardonnay has quickly affirmed itself as one of the most popular international grape varieties. Introduced in the late 19th century by Piedmontese winegrowers, it spread throughout the Italy starting from the regions of Trentino-Alto Adige, Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Sicily. It is often used in purity, to produce still white wines, but is also employed as a key component for classic method sparkling wines, such as the famous Franciacorta.
In the province of Verona, it is mainly cultivated in the Valpolicella Orientale and Soave areas, where excellent still, fresh and fruity Chardonnays are produced, often in blends with local grape varieties such as Garganega.

Torre Pieve Chardonnay Igt is produced in our estate in Pieve di Colognola ai Colli. The name of the wine combines that of the locality where our estate is located with an architectural peculiarity of the building: a historic tower that dominates the fields and, like a sundial, projects its shadow over the Chardonnay vineyards. It seems that this building, dating back to pre-Caligera times, was used as a watchtower to guard the border between the valley and the surrounding plain.

Our family has always appreciated Chardonnay wine. Gaetano Bertani, in particular, was for years a member of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, a historic wine and food association, founded in France in 1934, with the aim of promoting and enhancing the products of the Burgundy region. The great passion for this wine and for French winemaking techniques inspired our ancestors to plant three prized clones of Burgundy Chardonnay at our estate in Pieve di Colognola ai Colli. Carefully grown, at high density and low yield, they have found in the soil with a high concentration of active limestone in the area, the ideal environment to grow and produce high quality grapes. From generation to generation, we have improved the vinification method of our Torre Pieve Chardonnay, reaching a technique that combines classical methods with a more experimental approach, which allows us to enhance the essence of this grape variety.

After a careful harvest, the Chardonnay grapes are macerated in steel. This is followed by a double vinification process. Half of the must ferments in steel, the other half in French oak barrels. In both cases, the bâtonnage technique is used. The fine lees, solid particles that usually settle at the bottom of the tank during fermentation, are brought back into suspension thanks to special sticks, “bâton” in French, now often replaced by more technological specific instruments. This mixing method gives the wine more structure and smoothness, ensures greater longevity and enriches it with refined hints of butter and dried fruit. It is then blended and left to age in the bottle to balance its structure. This is a production process that moves away from traditional canons and allows us to enhance the typical scents and aromas of the Chardonnay grape in all its nuances.
We suggest tasting our Chardonnay Igt in a medium-sized white wine glass. To fully appreciate its bouquet and aromas, it should be served at a temperature of around 10-12°C.
Chardonnay is an extremely versatile wine that lends itself to a wide variety of gastronomic pairings. You can enjoy it both with fish, for example with shellfish or baked fillet of sea bream, and with meat, served with dishes such as roast chicken or rabbit alla cacciatore. Among vegetarian pairings, we recommend it with asparagus risotto, pumpkin soup or vegetable quiche. If you prefer stronger flavours and want to experience some typical Veronese dishes, Chardonnay goes well with bigoli with sardines or with game ragout.
